SOUNDS OF MANTUA

Built between the 14^th and 17^th centuries, the Ducal Palace in Mantua (Lombardy) is one of Italy's largest and most sumptuous architectural complexes. As soon as it was built, it established itself as a Renaissance landmark, and a veritable musical showcase.

Thanks to Gonzagas, lords of the city and illustrious family of patrons, the palazzo became a major cultural center, welcoming numerous artists and musicians - from Pisanello to Rubens, from Frescobaldi to Handel. Within its walls, a chapter of Western musical history was written: it was here, in 1607, that composer Monteverdi premiered “L'Orfeo”, sealing the birth of modern opera.

This film takes us on a visual and musical journey through the splendor of the Lombard city, tracing its musical history alongside mezzo-soprano Lea Desandre and lutenist Thomas Dunford.
