Built between the 14th and 17th centuries, the Ducal Palace in Mantua (Lombardy) is one of Italy's largest and most sumptuous architectural complexes. As soon as it was built, it established itself as a Renaissance landmark, and a veritable musical showcase.
Thanks to Gonzagas, lords of the city and illustrious family of patrons, the palazzo became a major cultural center, welcoming numerous artists and musicians - from Pisanello to Rubens, from Frescobaldi to Handel. Within its walls, a chapter of Western musical history was written: it was here, in 1607, that composer Monteverdi premiered “L'Orfeo”, sealing the birth of modern opera.
This film takes us on a visual and musical journey through the splendor of the Lombard city, tracing its musical history alongside mezzo-soprano Lea Desandre and lutenist Thomas Dunford.
