DALE: UNDERCOVER

In the early 1990s, Washington D.C. was the deadliest city in the US. Crime was rampant and gangs were fighting a bloody war to gain control of the drug trade. Over 400 were shot dead every day, and thousands more injured. To dismantle these criminal groups, the Washington PD set up special units of undercover agents. Dale Sutherland, policeman and pastor, was one of those agents.

For over 20 years, Dale led a double life, conducting Bible studies by day and working undercover in illegal networks by night. A master in the art of infiltration, he filmed criminals without their knowledge, using multiple fictitious identities: Italian mobster, pimp, drug trafficker, rap producer…

Based on hundreds of hours of video footage recorded by Dale himself in the midst of his operations, and through the personal account of this former agent, this documentary series offers a deep dive into the criminal underworld of 1990s’ D.C.
