Hungry minds stalk our oceans and today’s new discoveries reveal the extraordinary intelligence of many marine predators. These wise assassins set elaborate traps and tap into each other’s expertise to reel in their prey.
In Argentina, orcas employ many strategies to hunt fish and sea lions but only now do scientists realize the extent of their ability to specialize in different techniques and train their offspring. In Alaska, some humpback whales work together to cast a lethal net, with each member of the pod playing a different role. In South Africa, dolphins and gannets cooperate to take advantage of the sardine run, creating a remarkable alliance between bird brains and mammalian might. Elsewhere, gulls and southern right whales have become deadly enemies locked in an intelligence arms race that’s constantly evolving. In Norway, two ancient foes – the humpback and the orca – now work together to combine their formidable brain power and predatory prowess.
These are the newly discovered secrets of the ocean’s super predators... the geniuses of the sea.
